What are your first thoughts when you hear the words ‘peace’ or ‘pleasure’? For some, the words may be associated with each other even possibly used interchangeably, but in reality, there is a very distinct difference as observed by Jay Shetty.
A Bristol-based project which monitors the long-term health and wellbeing of more than 14,000 people who were born in the 1990’s is contributing to the study of long Covid.
‘The Children of the 90’s’ study members will be issued with wearable tech, similar to Fitbit type watches, which will monitor and measure exercise ability, breathing and heart rate.
Around 1 in 20 people experience symptoms of long Covid after initial infection, which sees symptoms lingering for more than two months.
Participants will also be required to complete regular questionnaires focused on their mental health as well as cognitive function and will be invited to a clinic in London where scans will used to look for any potential damage to vital organs. Along with this information, researches will use the data provided by the wearable tech to discover more in relation to long Covid risk factors, it’s impact on health and wellbeing and help formulate strategies in order to treat it.
One such member, Jamie Bridgeman who was born in 1991 and one of the first people to take part in the ‘Children of the 90’s’ study has been suffering with long Covid after initially becoming infected in April 2020. The 29-year-old advised that; ‘I have days where I am very breathless and lethargic’, adding ‘Some days you physically can’t get out of bed, you can’t go up the stairs, it’s a real effort. It is getting better, but it is taking a lot of time’.
Principal investigator at the Children of the 90’s, Professor Nic Timpson said that; ‘Bristol’s Children of the 90’s participants should be proud that through their contribution, this study will enable better diagnostic tools for long Covid, and a clearer understanding of the condition itself’.
The study into the consequences of long Covid is being led by University College London and is being funded by a £9.6 million grant from the National Institute for Health Research and UK Research and Innovation.
